About Livonia:

Livonia is a city located in the northwest part of Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 100,545. The city is a part of the Detroit metropolitan area, being about 22 miles northwest from downtown Detroit and 2 miles from the outer fringes of Detroit (Livonia and Detroit share Redford as a common border). According to the Chicago Tribune, Livonia has the greatest percentage of Caucasian residents of cities over 100,000 in the country, therefore leading them to label it the city with the highest percentage of Caucasians, even though it has above the state average for non-Caucasian residents. The 2000 U.S. Census puts the Caucasian population of Livonia above 95%. The schools are considered good, and a desirable feature to living there. There are three high schools which are all quite large - in order of student population, they are Churchill High School, Stevenson High School, and Franklin High School. The public school Webster Elementary School is home to the ACAT program, Alternative Classes for the Academically Talented. Frost Middle School homes the program MACAT, Michigan Alternate Classrooms for the Academically Talented. Churchill High School homes the program MSC, the Math Science and Computer Program. These programs hold a bright young group of people, who are academically talented and interested. The public school system also serves parts of Westland.

Livonia Geography:

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 92.8 km2 (35.8 mi2). 92.5 km2 (35.7 mi2) of it is land and 0.3 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.33% water.

Livonia Demographics:

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 100,545 people, 38,089 households, and 28,071 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,086.8/km2 (2,815.0/mi2). There are 38,658 housing units at an average density of 417.9/km2 (1,082.3/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 95.45% White, 0.95% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.94% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 38,089 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $63,018, and the median income for a family is $72,720. Males have a median income of $54,137 versus $35,273 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,923. 3.2% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Livonia History:

First settled by pioneers from New England and New York, an act by the legislature of the Territory of Michigan established the borders of Livonia Township on March 17, 1835. Livonia was incorporated into a city on May 23, 1950 by vote of the citizens of the township. A significant motivation was to gain tax revenues from the Ladbroke DRC (Detroit Race Course), which was Michigan's only thoroughbred horse racetrack, and closed in 1998.
